Project Description One of the most sought after tree species in the bonsai world, both in Japan and around the globe, is the Itoigawa Shimpaku Juniper (Juniperus chinensis ‘Itoigawa’), as its foliage is fine, compact, and lends itself well to bonsai culture. In this episode of Bonsai-U, we explore the process of creating shohin, or small-size bonsai under 20cm in height, from cuttings of Itoigawa Shimpaku Juniper. In Part 1 of this 2 part series, Bjorn explains the initial steps necessary to create proper movement in the trunk-line of a future shohin Itoigawa bonsai, as well as how to prune and wire the whip properly to aid in the creation process. Part 2, which will be released soon, will explain the secondary steps of shari and jin creation, as well as branch placement and pad formation on a slightly more developed Itoigawa Shimpaku after several years of work.
